The wine’s intense color stimulates individual memories and transports us to the immense vineyard and rugged landscape of the Douro wine terraces. A broad journey of flavors is manifested through the density and strength of the pleasant and seductive aromas, with a more sophisticated side provided by the use of good French oak barrels. At the time of tasting it closes with a muscular structure and a juicy texture that intertwine with the body of the wine, providing for a tense, long, and deep finish.

We went to the highest slopes in the top of Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo to pick the grapes that mature more slowly and maintain greater freshness and linearity, and to create a new wine: the Quinta Nova Blanc de Noir, a Reserva white wine made from red grapes. The beautiful Tinta Roriz grapes are the first to enter our winery. We harvest them at their perfect maturation point, so that we can extract all the components that make this wine unique and sublime.

Delicate citrus aromas combined with white stone fruit support the complex and vibrant, enigmatic aroma. With remarkable firmness granted by the red grapes, this is a compact, fresh and tense wine, offering an endless finish with great precision, as a great wine should be. We realised that the Douro’s white wines, while still young, would bring other forms of expression from our micro-terroirs. The almost infinite combinations of soil, altitudes, solar exposure and grape varieties have been experimented and refined, and different lots have been bottled with a very personalised character.

The first study for monovarietal planting in the Douro region was conducted in Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, between 1979 and 1981, in conjunction with the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture, through the Centro de Estudos Vitivinícolas do Douro (Douro Winemaking Studies Centre). In the study, the best solar exposures were chosen in Quinta Nova to study the planting of three grape varieties: Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca.
VINEYARD
The Parcela 28 (Plot), planted with Tinta Roriz, consists of 2650 vines, with a slope of 25% and an altitude between 205 and 210 metres. Tinta Roriz clearly demonstrates the challenge of wine and human persistence in preserving an ancient and authentic Douro. The austerity of the grape variety is noticeable in the palate, but at the same time, we are seduced by a contemporary sophistication that, allied to a centuries-old vineyard gives rise to a Referência (Reference) in the Portuguese Douro: a wine full of minerality, blue berries, rich in spicy notes, with a firm structure and a very narrow mouth. The high concentration, density and depth expresses well its origin.

VINEYARD
The Parcela 29 (Plot), planted with Touriga Nacional, has 3300 vines, a slope of 20%, and an altitude between 170 and 205 metres. It represents a unique wine and a fundamental piece in the history of Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo in its maximum expression of terroir. A genuine Referência (reference) that combined with century-old vines, results in a wine with a very elegant profile, almost feminine, contrasting with an intense structure of juicy tannins of enormous precision. A schist texture of high gravity,
the savoury profile, and the purple colour reflects the nature of the Touriga Nacional variety.

The first wine and the first Vintage from Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo was produced in 1992. Great Vintages are defined in terms of concentration, structure, and robustness. They are the manifestation of Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo’s magnificent terroir, of careful winemaking and refined ageing. Always wines with an element of tension, they manage to reveal a wonderful balance between muscle and gravity, with a long and extraordinarily precise finish.

VINIFICATION | Manual grapes selection at the entrance to the cellar and fermentation in traditional granite tanks for two days, with temperature control. Intense pumping over and maceration for a further two days and fortifications by 20% with grape spirit (77% vol.). Storage in oak barrels and stainless-steel tanks for 2 years.

Douro is one of the wildest and most rugged regions in Portugal, carved by the valley of the Douro River and the poverty of the schistous soils. Nowhere else in Portugal is man's intervention in the landscape so evident, visible in the thousands of terraces scattered throughout the region, defying the gravity of the steep slopes where the vines are planted. For its beauty and monumentality, the region was recognized by UNESCO as a "World Heritage Site". Douro region runs along the axis of the River Douro, stretching from the Spanish border to about ninety kilometres from the city of Porto.
